چکیده

Scissors are used to determine the hardness of fresh insects of different size and taxa. Our results indicate a strong relationship between the size of an insect and its hardness, which can be expressed as log(Fmax) = 0.65 × log(V) + α . Fmax is the maximal force needed to cut the insect and is our measure of insect hardness. V is the volume of the insect and a is a constant that can be derived for different insect taxa. The value of 0.65 was found as an average of beetle and moth samples, and this number appears consistent across insect taxa. We found that beetles averaged about 3.2 times harder than moths of the same size. Beetles were also more variable in hardness than moths, with the softest beetles about equal in hardness to an average moth of the same size. Using our data on insect hardness coupled with data on the diets of bats and their bite forces from the literature, we attempt to determine whether the upper size limit of insects taken by a bat is limited by the insect’s dimensions or its hardness. Our results indicate that both these factors may be important.

Biomechanical Properties of Hemlocks: A Novel Approach to Evaluating Physical Barriers of the Plant–Insect Interface and Resistance to a Phloem-Feeding Herbivore

Micromechanical properties that help mediate herbivore access may be particularly important when considering herbivorous insects that feed with piercing-sucking stylets. We used microindentation to quantify the micromechanical properties of hemlock, Tsuga spp., to quantify the hardness of the feeding site of the invasive hemlock woolly adelgid, Adelges tsugae. We measured hardness of the hemloc...

Effect of Particle Size, Compaction Force and Presence of Aerosil 200 on the Properties of Matrices Prepared from Physical Mixture of Propranolol Hydrochloride and Eudragit RS or RL

Objective Eudragits are widely used polymers in the production of oral sustained release dosage forms. The application of these polymers in the production of inert insoluble matrices has been investigated. However the effect of particle size, compaction force and presence of Aerosil 200 as a glidant on the properties of Eudragit RS and RL matrices prepared by direct compression of their physic...

The Effect of sintering temperature on microstructure and hardness of milled WC- 20 wt.% equiatomic (Fe,Co) cemented carbides

In this study, WC–20 wt.% equiatomic (Fe,Co) powder mixture was milled in a planetary ball mill. The effects of different milling time (15 min, 5h, 10h, and 25 h) and sintering temperatures on the microstructure and mechanical properties of this equi-Fe substituted cermet were investigated. The structural evolution and the crystallite size changes of the powders during milling were monitored by...

Effects of Various Ageing Heat Treatments on Microstructural Features and Hardness of Piston Aluminum Alloy

Piston aluminum alloys have different intermetallic phases, such as Cu3Al, Mg2Si ,and AlNi phases. The morphology and the distribution of such phases have important roles on mechanical properties of the piston material. Therefore, in this research, various ageing heat treatments on the mentioned material were done and the microstructural feature and the hardness were studi...

The effect of heat input on the microstructure and hardness of continuous fiber laser welded high Al-content δ-TRIP steel

Recent research suggests that extraordinary combinations of strength and ductility can be achieved in the so-called TRIP steels. With the development of these steels, welding with small weld nugget size and acceptable strength are needed. For these reasons present study was carried out to investigate the effect of heat input onweld size, microstructure and the hardness of the welded metal of 0....
